Volunteer Naturalists Wanted!

New Bird WatchersRichardson Bay Audubon Center & Sanctuary is looking for energetic individuals with an interest and passion for teaching children of all ages about the nature and wildlife around them.

Volunteer Naturalists learn from our Education Director and Teacher Naturalists and interact with students, teachers, and the general public.

Volunteers will:

  • Receive training once a week for 4 weeks to learn to lead programs, manage student groups, become familiar with program materials and understand Audubon’s mission.
  • Lead small groups of children on hour long school yard and neighborhood bird walks for 1st through 3rd grade students
  • Lead hour long in-class bird, geology, or watershed education programs for Kindergarten through 4th grade students
  • Gather and set-up materials needed for school yard and neighborhood bird walks and in-class programs
  • Lead Audubon’s Birds Center Field Trip programs. Field trips run 1.5 to 3 hours depending on grade.

Physical Requirements:

  • Occasional heavy lifting/carrying
  • Able to walk along uneven surfaces, marshes, steps, sand
  • Able to get up and down from the ground easily

Volunteer Naturalists should be able to interact well with children, teens and adults, be willing to work in weather conditions such as light rain and moderately cold temperatures, and be able to drive to schools for programs and bird walks. The majority of programs are during the school day. Some programs may be after school or on weekends. We request Volunteer Naturalists to commit to a minimum of two days per month and an average of 4.5 hours per day. All volunteers will need CARCO background checks to be able to work with children.
