Afternoon Adventures Intern

Richardson Bay Audubon Center & Sanctuary, Tiburon, CA, is looking for energetic youth with a passion for exploring nature with young children and sharing the wonders of nature and environmental science. Interns will learn to supervise and lead Audubon Afternoon Adventures and Extended Camp explorations.

Afternoon Adventures consists of nine weeklong afternoon sessions for children ages 5-11.  Camp sessions run June 20 – August 19. Hours are 1-5:30pm, Monday through Friday.

Intern responsibilities include:

  1. Supervising young children in Afternoon Adventures and Extended Camp program
  2. Preparing and implementing afternoon camp curriculum and activities
  3. Preparing materials for camp and cleaning up materials after use
  4. Supervising afternoon Youth Naturalists
  5. Learning to lead camp activities in a safe and engaging manner
  6. Welcoming campers each afternoon and helping them feel safe and comfortable
  7. Making sure campers are signed out by appropriate adult
  8. Additional duties that contribute to the success of a non-profit 

Additional Functions:

  1. Participate in sanctuary management including beach cleanup, as appropriate
  2. Stock kitchen and bathroom supplies as used during camp
  3. Additional functions as directed by supervisor

 

Relationships:
Internal:   Report to Education Director, interact with all staff
External:  Volunteers, students, local schools and community

Qualifications: (e.g., education, training, experience, licenses and skills)

  1. You must be 16-18 years of age
  2. Ability to create a safe, warm and welcoming atmosphere to awaken children's curiosity for and enjoyment of nature
  3. At least 2 years experience with Audubon or similar organization as a Youth Naturalist
  4. Able to interact well with children, teens and adults, especially parents
  5. Experience working with children
  6. Reliable, self-motivated, emotionally mature, creative and team player
  7. Strong organizational skills with attention to detail
  8. Interest in local natural history and the outdoor environment
  9. Committed to 4 or more weeks of summer
  10. Willing to work outdoors in any weather as necessary
  11. Current First Aid/CPR certification
  12. Minors under age 18 need to submit an employment certificate with application

 

Physical Requirements: (e.g., lifting, reaching, climb, push/pull, etc.)
Willing and able to play outdoors for extended periods of time with children. Occasional heavy lifting/carrying.
