Richardson Bay Audubon Center & Sanctuary, Tiburon, CA, has one paid internship available for an energetic High School or college student with a passion for the environment and outdoor education. The Youth Intern will receive training and gain experience and knowledge in environmental education, local ecology, and group management. They will learn to convey what they learn to children, their peers, and adults as part of after school programs and our summer Afternoon Explorations program. Internship duration is April – September 2011 and will culminate in a community outreach project focused on coastal, bay, or watershed awareness.
Intern responsibilities include:
- Committing to regular weekly after-school training or participation in after school program.
- Committing to participation in our Audubon Youth Leadership and Naturalist training. See schedule below.
- Supervising young children in Afternoon Explorations June 20 – August 19.
- Afternoon Explorations responsibilities include:
- Preparing and implementing afternoon camp curriculum and activities
- Preparing materials for camp and cleaning up materials after use
- Supervising afternoon Youth Naturalists
- Learning to lead outdoor exploration activities in a safe and engaging manner
- Welcoming campers each afternoon and helping them feel safe and comfortable
- Ensuring campers are signed out by appropriate adult
- Working with Education Director to coordinate event for Coastal Clean-up Day and Coast Weeks that engages their local community, peers, and REI staff.
- Working with Education Director to educate and recruit peers to participate in youth led after school outdoor education programs for elementary students in San Rafael or Marin City.
- Completing a community outreach project focused on coastal, bay, or watershed awareness and recruiting their community, school, REI and Audubon Staff to participate.
- Additional duties that contribute to the success of a non-profit
Qualifications:
- Must be 16-22 years of age
- School Permit to Employ and Work
- Reliable, self-motivated, creative, team player
- Strong organizational skills with attention to detail
- Interest in the outdoor environment
- Willing to work outdoors in varied weather including light rain
- Ability to create a safe, warm and welcoming atmosphere to awaken children's curiosity for and enjoyment of nature
- Able to interact well with children, teens and adults, especially parents
- Committed to the entire 6 months
- Interest in the outdoor environment
- Current First Aid/CPR certification a plus
Physical Requirements:
Willing and able to play outdoors for extended periods of time with children. Occasional moderate lifting/carrying.
Schedule:
5 - 10 hours per week April to mid-June, includes Audubon Youth Leadership and Naturalist Training (see schedule options for training below). 20 hours per week June 20-July 1, 2011. 25 hours per week July 5 – August 19, 2011. 5-10 hours per week September 6 -20, 2011. Salary $8/hr.

- Orientation: Saturday, May 21st, 9am-4pm OR Saturday, June 4th 9am-4pm
- Leadership Training: Wednesday, June 1st 4-7pm (includes pizza dinner)
- Education/Restoration Training: Saturday, June 11th ,9:30am-1:30pm OR Thursday, June 16th, 9:30am-1:30pm
- Camp Readiness: Friday, June 17th 11am-4pm
